Russ' birthday was lots of fun! I was so careful to plan fun things for him, I tried to buy thoughtful gifts and all of my planning and secrecy was ruined by a three-year old. Cole must not understand the meaning of a secret or surprise. I took the boys shopping for Russ and when we got home Russ asked Cole what we were getting him for his birthday and he announces, "Running Shoes!" Yep, Russ' gifts were spoiled before I had even purchased them. So, I took Russ to pick out his own shoes since the secret was already out. Russ has been working out on this lunch hour and even wanted to try running, so new shoes were just what he needed.
So, since Russ knew what his "big" gift would be, I thought I would surprise him by having a rainbow trout cake made for him. A girl in our ward makes amazing cakes and she was excited about trying it out. I knew it would look good, but I had no idea it would look just like a real fish. It has scales, fins, a glimmer that makes it look real, an eye, and gills -- the cake was unbelievable. I called two of Russ' friends from school (Dave - went to VCU and is an oral surgery resident and Cody - a pedo resident) and had them and their families come. When I picked up the cake I told Cole that he couldn't tell Dad about the cake. Saturday night Russ was folding up a blanket and told Cole it was from Grandma Guymon for his birthday. Cole exclaims, "You have a fish cake and I will help you blow out the candles. Mommy told me not to tell and that it was a secret." Another surprise ruined -- uugghh!
The amazing, unbelievable cake
Eating the fish...I mean cake
Today the boys and I joined Russ at school for lunch and loved seeing him during the day. Garrett was passed from girl to girl and snuggled up close while Cole showed off and started acting really silly (can you tell he is three?!).
I hope Russ had a special birthday, even without any surprises. Russ is so much fun, works so hard for our family, loves playing with his boys and is a fantastic father, loves me despite my imperfections, and continues to be a dreamer. Happy Birthday, Russ!

That cake is awesome. I love cakes and have dreams of having mad skills like that lady in your ward! Happy Birthday Russ!
Happy Birthday Russ!
That cake is amazing! I totally understand about the no surprises thing. Nate is getting much better about it, but I pretty much buy everything online if I want it to be a real surprise.
I hope he had a great birthday. I can't believe that cake, that is serious talent. As for the surprises, don't feel bad, I don't think they get the hang of that until they're a lot older, you'll have to start shopping in secret:)
We hope that Russ had a fabulous birthday! I looks like a fun day, even if the surprises were ruined. :) Joshua did that, too, when it was Bryan's birthday, but thankfully Bryan wasn't paying attention when Joshua spilled the secret! That cake is really cool, too!
Happy Birthday Russ! That is one AMAZING cake. Kade always spoils our secrets too, we've just decided there are no secrets with a 3 year old in the house :)
Happy Birthday Russell! It sounds like you had a great day of celebration. That cake is amazing and Cole and Garrett are getting bigger and cuter by the day.
That cake IS amazing! I will have to give Gabby and Heather my compliments.
Happy Birthday Russ! The cake is way cool. It looks real enough to taste fishy!
Cole is so cute. It is hard to keep secrets when you are so excited. What a neat cake! That is great the Russ is trying to exercise. Maybe he can convince Kyle to do it too. We are excited to come to Iowa. We are planning on moving in around the 10th of June. Can't wait to see you guys!
Happy Birthday Russ!! Taking up running huh? Will you be joining Katrina in a marathon anytime soon? I can't believe that cake-it's pretty darn amazing! I love that Cole told the secret then told he wasn't supposed to tell the secret. Funny little boy!!
Awesome cake!!!! Jason will be so jealous!
Happy Birthday, Russ! Hope it was a good one! It's so hard to surprise you guys with anything! You either have a 3 year old that spills the beans or you want "big ticket" items that us, girls, are totally intimidated picking out. At least you seem to be always happy with what you get! That cake looks seriously disgusting. It looks so slimy and real! I'm sure it was delicious! That is pretty incredible! Happy Birthday to Katrina today! Hopefully, you get equally spoiled!
Happy late birthday, Elder Guymon!!
Colby and Rachel Morris
That cake is amazing! I love that Cole gave away all the surprises!!
